North Borneo Material Culture Postcard #1 : Siung (Kadazan Papar)

The Kadazan Papar sun hat, Siung, is easily recognisable by its steeply conical shape. It is made of bamboo, fern, and rattan and dyed with black and red colours. It is worn by the Kadazan Paper women to complete their traditional attire. The siung is adored with flowers and feathers to indicate the status of a woman - single, married or widowed.
